Solaris-5 with ASA EQ1000 WF f1.3

Solaris-5

a novel optical sensor for space surveillance of the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center, Polish Academy of Sciences

Solaris-5 will be deployed by the end of 2022 at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO).

The ASA EQ1000 f1.3 telescope is a prime focus optical system that together with the chosen large format camera will provide an impressive field of view of 2.7 by 2.7 degrees (7.3 deg squared).

Solaris-5 will be capable of tracking resident space object from LEO to GEO and used to search for space debris with a particular focus on GEO. It will contribute to planetary defense by searching for Near Earth Objects (NEOs). Among others, we also plan to employ the sensor to search for extrasolar asteroids and comets such as the famous Oumuamua the first known interstellar object detected passing through the Solar System.
