ASA600 successfully installed at Vienna’s Historic Urania Observatory

A new chapter in public astronomy: ASA Astrosysteme has successfully installed its ASA600 telescope at the Urania Observatory in Vienna, Austria. Featuring a 600 mm primary mirror, high-performance optics and modern remote-control capabilities, the new system brings enhanced observing opportunities to one of Austria’s most historic public observatories.

Precision Installation 26 Metres Above Street Level

The telescope system was lifted into position by a specialised crane with approximately 900 kg of equipment. Following the lifting operation, the new telescope was installed inside the dome, marking a major milestone in the observatory’s modernisation project.

Remote Operation and Real-Time Image Transmission

Beyond its optical performance, the new installation introduces expanded possibilities for digital astronomy and science communication.

The telescope system can be operated remotely, and images can be transmitted in real time. This creates opportunities to conduct observations from other locations, display live astronomical images on the dome of the Vienna Planetarium in the Prater, and stream observations online.

More about ASA600

Modern Technology for a Historic Observatory

Opened in 1910, the Urania Observatory is Austria’s oldest public observatory. Its previous double-telescope installation had been in service since 1980. After more than four decades of operation, wear affecting the telescope and its mount, together with the lack of available spare parts, made a comprehensive modernisation necessary.

With the ASA600, the observatory gains a modern optical instrument designed to support public observing, educational activities and new forms of digital astronomy.

ASA Astrosysteme is proud to contribute to the future of public astronomy at the Urania Observatory in Vienna.
